Bruce Minturn, Minturn Design Services
"Oil: What Alternative Fuels Are Alternatives To"
Per capita, Americans use 3 gallons of crude oil per day in the form of gasoline, jet fuel, plastics, and other refined products. Yet most of us have never seen crude oil and possess only a vague understanding of its nature and geologic origin. To better acquaint us with this most prized and problematic fuel, Bruce Minturn will describe the physical and chemical properties of crude oil and illustrate how it formed in the distant past and how it is now extracted from the earth. In closing, Bruce will graphically portray the volume of global oil consumption and the daunting task of producing substitutes for it.
Bruce Minturn has a BS degree in Earth Sciences from the University of Washington. He teaches energy auditing for the Environmental Outreach and Stewardship Alliance (EOS) in Seattle. Leslie Moynihan, Northwest Sustainable Energy for Economic Development, and
Meg Gluckman, Seattle City Light
“Solar Primer” What solar options are there for
Seattle residents? Are there any financial incentives? What is the
process I should go through to figure out if I have a good location for
solar? Participants will learn about the design, installation, costs
and benefits of both solar electric (photovoltaic) and solar hot water
systems in order to help them decide which options best suit their
particular goals and resources. Carrie Nelson “Electrical Fields and Human Health” Do cell phones cause cancer? Are microwave ovens safe? These questions come up for many people, and the answers are often more complex than simple. Come educate yourself with a presentation about what kinds of electromagnetic fields our bodies produce naturally, what kinds of fields our modern technologies surround us with, and how the two interact. Hayden Robinson, Hayden Robinson Architect
“Passive House and Very Energy Efficient Buildings”
A typical 1,500 square foot Passive House home can be heated with the energy it takes to run a blow dryer. Passive House combines building envelope efficiency and passive solar principles to reduce heating energy use by 85%. More than 15,000 examples - from single family homes to very large commercial and institutional buildings – have been completed worldwide. Hayden Robinson will provide an introduction to Passive House and an overview of strategies for creating very low energy use buildings.
Hayden Robinson is a Seattle architect and Certified Passive House Consultant specializing in very low energy use buildings. He is a member of the Steering Committee for the Central Puget Sound Chapter of the Northwest Ecobuilding Guild where he serves as Chairperson for the Passive House Committee. John Seager, Population Connection
"Global Population: 6.8 Billion and Growing. Are We There Yet?" With the earth's population growing by one billion every dozen years, there is a clear connection between human population growth and virtually every global challenge from poverty to climate change and from species extinction to the political instability of failed nation-states. We know what needs to be done to achieve global population stabilization, namely access to affordable voluntary family planning together with the full empowerment of women. The presentation includes a brief overview of the causes of rapid population growth, its impacts, and how to meet this challenge through voluntary approaches.
Population Connection is the national grassroots population organization that educates young people and advocates progressive action to stabilize world population at a level that can be sustained by Earth's resources. Population Connection has 150,000 members, supporters, and participating educators.
John Seager was formerly with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and also served as Chief of Staff for then-U.S. Representative Peter H. Kostmayer (D-PA).
