SOLAR 101 With Larry Owens Co-Founder and President of Shoreline Solar Project Wednesday November 17th 7-9 pm Do
Solar power and Solar Hot Water (Solar Thermal) actually work well in
the Pacific Northwest? What is the cost benefit? Can I really save money
using Solar? About Larry Owens: Larry teaches Solar Thermal Design for the Clean Energy Technology Program at Shoreline Community college and has spent years in the solar energy field. He is co-founder and president of the Shoreline Solar Project, a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to bringing renewable energy solutions to the community and to promoting sustainable residential, commercial and community practices. A former international business executive and classroom teacher, Larry's interest in solar started when he organized the 1st Earth Day event in high school. Larry served as a board member and vice president of Solar Washington for four years and was the catalyst behind state legislation that granted sales tax exemption to solar thermal systems in our state. "I truly believe that change must start at the community level, and that we can all play an important part in improving our local environment." Larry currently runs Bright Solutions LLC, advising clients on solar energy projects. He previously worked as a solar specialist and group manager of Smart Solar Solution, the solar division of Shoreline based NW Mechanical. Larry is a member of the Green Technology Advisory Committee for the college.

Clean Heating Choice: With Amy Warren, Communications Specialist for the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency Wednesday October 20th 7-9 pm Decisions you make about how you heat your home make a difference for air quality, your health, the health of your neighbors and the health of our planet. Different fuel choices come with an array of environmental, economical and health considerations. During the winter months, over 60 percent of the Puget Sound region's fine particle pollution come from fireplaces and wood stove, compared to about 15% coming from vehicles and 2% from industry. It takes just three months for wood smoke to become Washington's third leading source of air pollution. Studies show that people who heat their homes with wood have more respiratory problems than those who don't. Smoke particles also invade neighboring homes. Research shows that children in wood-burining neighborhoods are more likely to have lung and breathing problems. Come learn ways that you can still enjoy a fire in your home, but lessen the impact to your health and that of your neighbors.
We'll discuss alternatives to heating your home with wood, as well as
better ways to burn wood that produces more heat with less pollution. About Amy Warren: Amy is a Communications Specialist for the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency where she plans, implements and manages marketing, education and outreach programs. She also serves on local and statewide task forces developing strategies and campaigns to engage the public in reducing fine particle pollution from indoor heating with wood. Amy has a degree in broadcast communications from Western Washington University and earned a certificate in public relations from the University of Washington. She is also a trained Master Composter/Soilbuilder for the City of Seattle and enjoys volunteer outreach promoting natural gardening and yard care.
