Around the Sound Community Band

www.communitybandsnw.org

The Around The Sound Community Band is a dynamic entity. We are incorporated as non-profit organization.

Currently we offer a beginning/intermediate band. We provide an opportunity for individuals, families or couples to enjoy mutual experience in making music.

Our band is a group of warm, caring people who love making music. The director is introduced on our web page.

Our band has become a community in its own right. There is a core of members who care for each other with patience and understanding. Those who have some experience remember being new and have patience. Being a member is as much about the fun as about the music. The good vibes of the group brings the music to life. We all love seeing a new face and welcoming a new member.

Our band members range from high school students to World War 2 veterans. We have six or more couples. We even have one extended family. We provide a place where families and friends can meet as equals in producing and providing a service to the community.

As a volunteer organization we have a changing profile. The actual makeup of the band is dependent on who wishes to play at any given time. We are always open to new players and welcome observation, drop-in playing, and new membership.

Our band does charge a modest tuition set by the board and sufficient to cover expenses. This changes from time to time and current information can be obtained by contacting us.

Willow Creek - Bluegrass Band

Paul Gillingham, Guitar/Vocals: Paul Gillingham began performing as a solo folk singer in Seattle, in the the late 1950's. After a tour in Los Angles returned to Seattle to form the first northwest bluegrass band-the Willow Creek Ramblers. They performed at the World's Fair and numerous concerts and festivals for almost 30 years. In the 1980's he lead groups that opened for the seldom scene, that Nashville Bluegrass Band, and Stephen Grappelli, to name a few.

Tom Moran, Mandolin: Be it sweet tremolo on a ballad, soulful Monroe-style blues licks, or a lightning-fast instrumental, Tom Moran has that rare gift of being innovative without ever losing touch with his pure bluegrass roots. He is the author of Mandolin Magazine’s bluegrass column and the founder of the Seattle Mandolin Orchestra. Tom also leads a bluegrass class at Shoreline Community College in Seattle.

Anna Scott, Upright Bass/Vocals: Anna Scott hails from beautiful Michigan State, raised in a musical family where she played flute for twelve years. As she was growing up, Anna would often hear bluegrass music performed locally at public functions (much like the Solar Fair). Upon moving to Seattle in 1970 she found a thriving bluegrass community which made her feel right at home. Her interests in bluegrass music grew and over the next few years she took up playing the banjo, guitar and bass fiddle. Anna became more interested in singing and decided that her place in bluegrass would be as a bass and guitar player and singer. She has performed in several local bluegrass bands over the past thirty years at such events as the Darrington Bluegrass Festival and the Northwest Folklife Festival.

Bill Scott, Banjo/Vocals: Bill Scott first heard Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs’ recording of “Roll in My Sweet Baby’s Arms” on the radio when he was three years old. He has loved the sound of the banjo ever since. Bill’s first banjo was purchased at Stan Boreson’s Music Store in Ballard for his birthday in 1959. Bill’s early banjo influences include the Kingston Trio, Flatt and Scruggs, the Stanley Bros. and Don Reno and Red Smiley. He has played banjo for nearly fifty years and has been a member (and sometimes founder) of several well known Seattle area based Bluegrass bands since the early 1970’s. He has performed many times at the Darrington Bluegrass Festival and also the Northwest Folklife Festival. He once opened for the late and great Hoyt Axton at a local private function. Bill is currently one of a small number of Bluegrass Banjo instructors in and around Seattle.
